This album contains hundreds of spectacular photographs of the caves, karst
landscapes, farms, and people of the Apuseni Mountain region south of Cluj,
Romania. With the Romanian Federation of Speleology as one of the driving
forces behind the books production, there is a strong focus on caves
and karst in the text, and 40 pages are devoted exclusively to cave photos. |
Our
concern for nature protection, our passion for the mountain and for caving
had slowly brought us to a certain degree of knowledge about the hidden
paths crossing the Apuseni, be it on the surface or underground...Once started,
the work leading to this album took us roaming on mountain peaks, in caves,
following trod valleys or streams, exploring forests and village roads,
protected areas and quarries, in search for the genius of the place. We
reached several forgotten hamlets, somehow intentionally placed by God in
wonderful hidden places where time stands still, we admired each time in
wonder the horses grazing free, we stepped into peoples homes, into
wooden churches that they built with their hearts, into workshops of story-like
artisans and we talked a lot to the people. That is how we found out that
the gold of the Apuseni is not the one hidden in the ground...It is something
very visible, found in peoples souls, in the unusual beauty of this
landscape...houses...churches...traditions. Mihai Gligan |
